The Supreme Court has granted interim protection to social activist Teesta Setalvad for a period of 7 days. This decision comes as a stay on the Gujarat High Court’s order, which had demanded her immediate surrender. The order was issued by a bench comprising Justices BR Gavai, AS Bopanna, and Dipankar Datta.
Recently, the Gujarat High Court denied Setalvad regular bail in a case related to the alleged creation of false evidence during the 2002 Gujarat riots. Consequently, the High Court had directed her to surrender without any delay.
As per the Supreme Court’s ruling, Setalvad is not required to surrender until the upcoming hearing, scheduled for July 8.
Teesta Setalvad is a renowned human rights activist who has dedicated many years to working on the Gujarat riots case. In June 2022, she was apprehended alongside former Gujarat Director General of Police R B Sreekumar and ex-IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt.
The three individuals were arrested under allegations of fabricating evidence to falsely implicate innocent people in the post-Godhra riots cases. All three of them have vehemently refuted these charges.
While the Supreme Court’s order provides temporary respite to Setalvad, it remains uncertain whether she will be granted regular bail. The outcome of the next hearing will play a pivotal role in determining the future trajectory of the case.
