Russia’s ambassador to Cuba, Andrei Guskov, announced on July 3, 2023 that President Vladimir Putin had received an invitation to visit the Communist-run island. However, President Vladimir Putin emphasized that it was premature to discuss preparations for the trip.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel reportedly extended the invitation during his 2022 visit to Russia. In February of that year, President Diaz-Canel and President Putin met in Moscow, where the Cuban president expressed that Putin would be warmly received in Cuba.
Both countries share strong political and economic ties and have faced U.S. sanctions in recent years. In response to Cuba’s human rights record, the United States imposed new sanctions in 2022. Russia, too, has been sanctioned by the United States for its invasion of Ukraine.
The timing of Putin’s potential visit to Cuba remains uncertain. Nevertheless, the invitation serves as a testament to the close relationship between the two nations.
