Van Houten was convicted of murder in 1971 and initially sentenced to death. However, her sentence was later changed to life in prison. Over the years, she was denied parole multiple times. In 2020, the California parole board recommended her release, but it was rejected by then-Governor Gavin Newsom. In May 2023, a state appeals court overturned Newsom’s decision.

The release of Leslie Van Houten has sparked mixed reactions. Some people believe that she has served her time and should be released. On the other hand, others argue that she still poses a threat to society. Following her release, Leslie Van Houten will be on parole for three years and will reside in a transitional living facility. She will be subjected to various restrictions, including drug testing and electronic monitoring.
