Nova Scotians Come Together to Help Flood Victims

The flooding in Nova Scotia caused “unimaginable” damage, with thousands affected and four people missing.

Heavy rains and thunderstorms caused widespread flooding in Nova Scotia on Saturday, July 22, 2023. In Halifax, a man paddled a kayak through floodwaters as buildings were seen upended on a riverbank. Heavy rain started on Saturday, making rivers and streams overflow, rising up to 2 metres. The Annapolis Valley was hit the hardest, with washed-away roads and destroyed homes. Emergency shelters by the Canadian Red Cross and a state of emergency were declared.

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston said it’s devastating for the province, expressing sympathy for those affected. Search continues for the four missing individuals. Transportation in the province disrupted with road closures, bridge damage, and flight cancellations.

The Canadian National Railway suspended service between Halifax and Montreal. This reminds us of nature’s power and the importance of preparedness for disasters. Stay updated on weather forecasts, evacuate if told, don’t drive through flooded areas.

Turn off utilities if leaving home, move valuables to higher ground, call for help if trapped. The people of Nova Scotia will endure this tragedy together with resilience.
