Victoria Bans Gas Connections to New Homes

Victoria, an Australian state, will prohibit natural gas connections in new homes from 2024. The goal is to lower emissions and cut energy bills, promoting clean energy alternatives. Existing homes and businesses won’t be affected, and remote areas may get exemptions.

Switching to electric appliances will be encouraged through financial incentives like rebates. Solar panels, heat pumps, and electric cooktops will receive support under these incentives. The ban will save an average of $2,000 per home and reduce 1.2 million tonnes of emissions yearly.

Victoria’s commitment to a clean energy future is evident through this climate action plan.

Here are some of the reasons why Australia is getting rid of gas:

  • Gas is a fossil fuel, and burning fossil fuels releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which contribute to climate change.
  • Gas is a relatively expensive fuel, and the cost of gas is expected to rise in the future.
  • There are cleaner and more efficient alternatives to gas, such as electricity and heat pumps.
  • Switching to cleaner energy sources will help to improve air quality and public health.
