Trump and co-conspirators allegedly sought to subvert a lawful presidential power transfer. They pressured state officials and Vice President Mike Pence to overturn Biden’s victory. The indictment also accuses Trump of inciting the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack.

This development is significant in the ongoing investigation of Trump’s role in the assault. It’s the third criminal charge against Trump in four months. In April, he faced contempt of Congress charges. In July, he was charged with campaign finance violations.

Trump vehemently denies any wrongdoing and vows to fight the charges. Nonetheless, the indictment deals a blow to his political ambitions. The Justice Department continues to probe Trump’s actions, possibly leading to more charges.

Whether he’ll be convicted remains uncertain, but the indictment is a step toward accountability. It shows that former presidents, even someone as powerful as Trump, must abide by the rule of law.
