Conflict in Sudan Displaces Over 2 Million People as UN Warns of Potential Crimes Against Humanity

The United Nations announced on Wednesday that the conflict in Sudan has forced over 2 million people to flee their homes, while also raising alarming concerns that intensifying attacks in Darfur city could constitute “crimes against humanity.”

Although the conflict in Sudan has spanned several decades, it has recently escalated. In April, a military coup toppled the civilian-led government, leading to widespread protests and a subsequent crackdown that has claimed the lives of hundreds of individuals.

The violence has been particularly severe in Darfur, where the UN reports that more than 1.6 million individuals have been displaced since April alone. The UN has also sounded the alarm that the attacks in Darfur may amount to crimes against humanity.

The UN Security Council is scheduled to convene on Thursday to discuss the situation in Sudan.
