George Santos’s father and aunt, Gercino Antônio dos Santos Jr. and Fátima Aziza Caruso Horta Devolder, were identified as bail guarantors. They stood for the indicted U.S. representative’s $500,000 bail. Santos fought to keep their identities anonymous but failed.
Santos, a Republican representing New Jersey’s 2nd congressional district, was indicted on June 16. The charges include wire fraud, securities fraud, and making false statements to the Federal Election Commission. Santos has pleaded not guilty.
Santos’s father and aunt are Brazilian citizens residing in New Jersey. They have not been accused of any wrongdoing related to the charges against Santos.
The bail agreement requires George Santos to surrender his passport. Santos must also wear an electronic monitoring device as part of the agreement. Furthermore, he is prohibited from traveling outside the United States without court permission.
Santos’s trial is scheduled to begin on September 12.
