46 Women Murdered at Honduran Prison: A Tragedy That Must End

The riot at the women’s prison in Honduras was a horrifying atrocity, according to President Xiomara Castro. Inmates had received threats from the Barrio 18 gang for weeks.The gang members managed to acquire weapons, bypass guards, and brutally attack their victims.They even carried locks to trap their victims inside, potentially to burn them alive.

The fire was so intense that cell walls turned black and beds were twisted metal. According to Juan López Rochez, the chief of operations for the National Police, armed individuals targeted a rival gang in the cellblock and opened fire.

The attack on the Honduran Prison was captured by security cameras until they were destroyed. The women overpowered the guards and took their keys, as seen in the footage. The riot at Tamara prison was planned by street gangs with the knowledge of authorities.

Security Minister Ramón Sabillón was fired and replaced by Gustavo Sánchez. It remains unclear how the Barrio 18 gang obtained weapons and moved freely within the Honduran Prison. Initial reports indicated that the doors to the gang’s cell block were left open.
