The Chinese navy has made a rare visit to Nigeria. This is the first time in more than ten years that a Chinese naval fleet has docked in West Africa. The visit demonstrates China’s increasing interest in the region and its willingness to collaborate with Nigeria on maritime security issues.
Led by the destroyer Nanning, the Chinese navy’s fleet arrived in Lagos on Sunday. The fleet consists of the frigate Sanya and the supply ship Weishanhu. These ships are expected to stay in Nigeria until July 6.
The Chinese ambassador to Nigeria, Chi Jianchun, described the visit as a “milestone in relations” between the two countries. He emphasized that the visit would further strengthen the bond between China and Nigeria and improve maritime security in West Africa.
The Nigerian navy expressed its readiness to cooperate with China in addressing maritime security threats and maintaining stability in the Gulf of Guinea. The Gulf of Guinea serves as a crucial shipping route for oil and gas but has been plagued by piracy and other maritime crimes in recent years.
