The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning about the imminent arrival of Cyclone Biparjoy, which is expected to bring heavy rainfall and the risk of flooding to Gujarat and Rajasthan. The cyclone is predicted to make landfall on Wednesday morning, prompting the IMD to issue an orange alert for Gujarat and a yellow alert for Rajasthan.
The IMD has cautioned that heavy to very heavy rainfall is anticipated in isolated areas of Gujarat and Rajasthan, with the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall in Saurashtra and Kutch. Widespread thunderstorms and lightning are also expected across both states.
While the cyclone is likely to weaken into a deep depression after reaching land, it is still anticipated to cause significant rainfall and potential flooding in Gujarat and Rajasthan.
In response to the cyclone, the Indian Railways has cancelled numerous train services in both Gujarat and Rajasthan. The Western Railway has cancelled 12 trains, while the North Western Railway has cancelled 10 trains.
The Gujarat government has issued an alert and urged residents to exercise caution. Relief camps have been established in coastal areas, and teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed.
Although the cyclone may provide relief from the intense heat in Gujarat and Rajasthan, it is also expected to result in extensive damage to property and crops.
