The World Health Organization (WHO) has included three additional India-made cough and cold syrups to its list of medicines. These syrups have the potential to cause acute kidney injuries and even lead to fatalities in children. The syrups are named Promethazine Oral Solution, Makoff Baby Cough Syrup, and Magrip N Cold Syrup.
These syrups were manufactured by Maiden Pharmaceuticals Limited, a company based in Haryana, India.
WHO issued an alert in October 2022. Four cough and cold syrups were linked to the deaths of 66 children in The Gambia. The syrups were manufactured by Maiden Pharmaceuticals. The same company is responsible for the four substandard products identified in The Gambia and reported to WHO in September 2022.
The WHO issued an alert in October 2022 against four India-made cough and cold syrups. Maiden Pharmaceuticals was also responsible for four substandard products reported to WHO in September 2022.
The WHO is investigating whether the three newly added syrups are also contaminated with diethylene glycol, a toxic chemical that can cause kidney failure. The WHO has advised countries to remove the syrups from the market and to monitor patients who have taken them.
This has led to calls for stricter quality control measures in the Indian pharmaceutical industry. Indian government taking the WHO’s alert seriously and investigating the matter.
Government will take action against any company selling contaminated medicines.
