Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has scheduled a plan to burn copies of the Centre ordinance on July 3. The burning event will take place at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) office in central Delhi. The ordinance, which was issued on May 19, grants the Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Delhi the power to appoint and transfer bureaucrats within the city.
The Aam Aadmi Party strongly opposes the ordinance, alleging that it is a ploy by the Delhi Centre to gain control over Delhi. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal deems the ordinance as “unconstitutional” and contradictory to the principles of federalism.
On July 3, the Aam Aadmi Party will stage a series of protests against the ordinance across Delhi’s 70 assembly constituencies.
The Centre justifies the ordinance, asserting that it is crucial for ensuring the smooth functioning of the Delhi government. Additionally, the Delhi Centre clarifies that the ordinance does not encroach upon the powers of the elected government in Delhi.
The Supreme Court’s verdict on the ordinance remains uncertain. The Aam Aadmi Party has filed a legal challenge against the ordinance in the Supreme Court.
