Mallikarjun Kharge, the leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, has called for the dismissal of Manipur’s Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh, as the first action Prime Minister Narendra Modi should take after assuming office. Kharge accuses Singh of failing to control the state’s law and order situation, which has resulted in the deaths of multiple civilians in recent violence.
Recent clashes between security forces and armed groups in Manipur have prompted the Congress leader’s comments. On June 18, 2023, six civilians were killed in firing by security forces in Churachandpur district, leading to widespread protests in the state.
Kharge believes that Singh has severely neglected his duty to protect the lives of Manipur’s people. Additionally, he accuses the BJP government of showing insensitivity towards the plight of the state’s population.
The Congress party’s allegations have been refuted by the Manipur government. L. Jayentakumar Singh, the state’s Home Minister, claims that the security forces resorted to firing in self-defense. He assures that the state government is committed to maintaining law and order in Manipur.
The situation in Manipur remains tense, and it remains uncertain whether the Prime Minister will heed Kharge’s demand to dismiss the Chief Minister.
