Madhya Pradesh Government Hikes Financial Aid for Farmers Under MKKY Scheme

The Madhya Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, has announced a hike in financial aid under the Mukhyamantri Kisan Kalyan Yojana (MKKY) scheme. The assistance provided to small and marginal farmers will now be increased from Rs 4,000 per year to Rs 6,000 per year. This decision comes just months ahead of the Assembly polls in the state.

Understanding the MKKY Scheme and Eligibility

The MKKY scheme was launched in 2018 with the aim of extending financial assistance to small and marginal farmers in Madhya Pradesh. Eligible farmers, owning less than two hectares of land, were previously entitled to receive Rs 4,000 per year in three equal installments.

Implications of the Hike in Financial Aid

With the increased financial aid, the state government will now incur an additional expenditure of Rs 10,000 crore annually on the MKKY scheme. The decision has been welcomed by farmers’ organizations, who believe that it will provide much-needed relief to farmers.

Reactions to the Announcement

While farmers’ organizations have expressed their support for the government’s decision, some have raised questions about the timing of the announcement. Critics argue that it is an attempt to attract voters ahead of the upcoming Assembly polls scheduled for November this year.

Here are key reactions to the government’s decision:

  1. Farmers’ organizations: Welcoming the decision, the Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) has praised the increased financial aid, acknowledging the relief it will bring to farmers.
  2. Opposition parties: Opposition parties, particularly the Congress party, have accused the government of attempting to buy votes. They consider the hike in financial aid to be a superficial measure that fails to address the fundamental challenges faced by farmers.
  3. Experts: Some experts have applauded the increased financial aid as a positive step. However, they emphasize the need for long-term solutions, including the provision of affordable inputs, improved irrigation facilities, and better market linkages for farmers.
