PP’s Lead in Spanish Election Narrows as PSOE Closes in

A recent poll reveals that the Spanish conservative People’s Party (PP) has seen its lead over the ruling Socialist Party (PSOE) narrow before the national election on November 19.

The poll conducted by the Elcano Royal Institute shows the PP with 30.1% of the vote and the PSOE with 28.5%. This signifies a significant reduction in the PP’s lead, which was previously at 4.5 percentage points in a May poll.

According to the poll, the far-right Vox party is projected to win 16.9% of the vote, while the Podemos party is expected to secure 10.1%. The remaining 14.5% of the vote would be divided among smaller parties.

Several factors contribute to the narrowing of the PP’s lead, including the ongoing economic crisis in Spain and recent corruption scandals involving the PP. Additionally, effective campaigning by the PSOE and the increasing popularity of its leader, Pedro Sánchez, in recent months have influenced the poll results.

The poll indicates that the upcoming Spanish election is likely to be highly competitive. While it is too early to determine the winner, the PP’s lead is no longer as secure as before.

Here are some additional details from the poll:

  • The PP’s lead is strongest in the south of Spain, while the PSOE’s lead is strongest in the north.
  • Vox is strongest in the east of Spain, while Podemos is strongest in the capital, Madrid.
  • The poll’s margin of error is +/- 3.1 percentage points.

The national election in Spain is scheduled to take place on November 19, 2023.
