The West Bengal government, under the leadership of State Power Minister Arup Biswas, has made substantial investments of Rs 27,000 crore in the power sector over the past 11 years. These investments have played a pivotal role in enhancing the state’s power generation capacity, which has surged from 4,085 MW in 2011 to an impressive 9,521 MW in 2022.
In addition to augmenting power generation, the government is actively working on upgrading the transmission and distribution network throughout the state. Numerous projects have already been initiated with the goal of improving this vital infrastructure and reducing aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) losses, ensuring a more efficient power supply.
With an unwavering commitment to providing uninterrupted power supply, the West Bengal government has achieved 100% electrification across the state. The focus now shifts to delivering seamless power access to every household, ensuring a reliable and consistent energy source for all.
Recognizing the importance of sustainable practices, the government is also promoting the adoption of renewable energy sources. A target has been set to generate 10,000 MW of power from renewable sources by 2025. To accomplish this ambitious goal, the government has initiated several projects and is actively working on harnessing the potential of renewable energy in the state.
Moreover, the West Bengal government is prioritizing the development of a smart grid—a modern power grid leveraging digital technology for advanced monitoring and control of electricity flow. The implementation of a smart grid system is expected to enhance the overall efficiency of the power sector, optimizing operations and improving reliability.
As the West Bengal government continues its progressive endeavors in the power sector, it strives to transform the state’s energy landscape, ensuring sustainable growth and meeting the evolving needs of its residents.
