Ariane 6 to Replace Ariane 5 in 2024

On July 5, 2023, Europe’s Ariane 5 rocket launched for the final time. The rocket had been in service for 27 years. It carried two military communications satellites into orbit. The launch was successful. However, it leaves Europe with a gap in its autonomous access to space.

The Ariane 5’s successor, the Ariane 6, is not yet ready for operational use. It has faced technical delays. The Ariane 6 is now expected to be ready by 2024. Meanwhile, Europe will have to rely on other launch providers for the next year, such as SpaceX and Roscosmos.

The retirement of the Ariane 5 is a setback to Europe’s space ambitions. The rocket was reliable and powerful. It played a key role in Europe’s space program. Its loss will make it more difficult for Europe to launch its own satellites and spacecraft.

However, the Ariane6 is expected to be a more capable rocket. It will carry heavier payloads into orbit. It will be more fuel-efficient. This means the Ariane 6 can launch more satellites at a lower cost.

In the meantime, Europe must rely on other launch providers. They will fill the gap left by the Ariane 5. It is not ideal, but a necessary step until the Ariane 6 is ready for operational use.
