Brave 10-Year-Old Girl Rescued After Being Lost for 24 Hours in Washington’s Cascade Mountains

In a remarkable display of resilience, a 10-year-old girl named Shunghla Mashwani was reunited with her family after enduring 24 hours of solitude in the treacherous Cascade Mountain Range in Washington. The courageous young girl had wandered off while playing in the woods near Cle Elum River on Sunday afternoon, prompting a frantic search and rescue operation.

The incident took place in the picturesque Cle Elum River Valley, located east of Seattle. Shunghla’s family, consisting of nearly 20 adults, noticed her absence when they gathered for lunch at the Cathedral Pass Trailhead on Fish Lake Road. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, they immediately reported her missing to the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office.

Due to the lack of cellphone service in the valley, the family had to rely on their own efforts for the initial search. After two hours of combing through the area, a kind passerby on a utility vehicle offered the use of a Starlink phone, which operates through satellite connectivity, at their nearby cabin. Using this phone, the family promptly contacted 911, triggering an immediate response from the police and a team of search and rescue volunteers.

The search operation faced significant challenges due to the rugged and remote terrain of the Cascade Mountain Range. The area was characterized by steep inclines, dense vegetation, and the fast-flowing Cle Elum River. Concerns were raised that Shunghla might have been swept away by the river’s swift current.

Undeterred by the formidable conditions, law enforcement agencies, police dogs, and unmanned drones were deployed to locate the missing girl. Additionally, volunteers from neighboring counties joined forces, demonstrating the solidarity of the community in such critical situations.

After an arduous 24-hour ordeal, Shunghla was discovered alive on Monday at approximately 3 p.m., approximately 2.5 kilometers away from her last known location. Remarkably, she had only sustained minor scrapes during her harrowing experience.

According to Shunghla’s account to both her family and the police, she had ventured off in search of a footbridge near the spot where her family was planning to have lunch. As she explored downstream through dense forest, nightfall descended, subjecting her to chilling temperatures. To survive the cold, she sought refuge huddled amidst a cluster of trees. Guided by her intuition, Shunghla trusted that following the course of the river would eventually lead her to civilization.
