Edward Caban, aged 55, became the 47th police commissioner of the New York City Police Department on July 17, 2023. He holds the distinction of being the first Hispanic to hold this position in the department’s 178-year history.
Caban’s journey in the NYPD began in 1991, and he has since fulfilled various roles, including sergeant, lieutenant, captain, deputy inspector, and inspector. In 2022, he was appointed as the first deputy commissioner.
Mayor Eric Adams, a former NYPD captain himself, acknowledged Caban’s pivotal role in the department’s efforts to combat crime in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Expressing his confidence in Caban, Mayor Adams stated, “Edward Caban is an exceptional leader who has devoted his life to safeguarding the people of New York. During this critical time, he is the ideal individual to lead the NYPD.”
