Delivery Workers’ Minimum Wage Law in New York City Faces Lawsuits

Uber, DoorDash, and other food delivery companies are suing New York City over a law setting a minimum wage for delivery workers. The law will take effect on July 12, 2023, and mandates a minimum wage of $17.96 per hour for delivery workers.

The companies argue that the law misunderstands the nature of the food delivery industry and claim that delivery workers are independent contractors, not employees.

They also assert that delivery workers are already fairly compensated and believe that the law will raise prices, hurting restaurants and consumers.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams defends the law, stating that it ensures a living wage for delivery workers and levels the playing field for businesses in the industry. The lawsuits are ongoing, and it remains uncertain whether the law will be overturned.

However, the outcome of the case will likely have a significant impact on the food delivery industry in New York City and beyond.
