In Los Angeles and Orange counties, thousands of hotel workers have started a strike on July 2, 2023. The workers are requesting higher wages and improved benefits. This strike, organized by Unite Here Local 11, affects more than 15,000 employees working at 62 hotels within the region.

The union’s objectives include a $6.25 wage increase over four years, improved healthcare benefits, and increased pension contributions. Additionally, they are advocating for the establishment of a hospitality workforce housing fund, which would be supported by a 7% tax on guests staying at unionized hotels.

According to the union, hotel workers in Los Angeles are struggling due to the soaring housing costs in the region. The median monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Los Angeles has surpassed $2,000, forcing many employees to endure long commutes.

This strike follows a series of labor actions by hotel workers in recent years. In 2019, Chicago hotel workers went on strike for 11 days, and in 2021, Boston hotel workers initiated a 15-day strike.

The strike in Los Angeles is anticipated to have a significant impact on the local hospitality industry. With existing staffing shortages, hotels will face even greater difficulty in finding replacement workers.

The duration of the strike remains uncertain as the union and management are currently engaged in negotiations. However, no agreement has been reached thus far.
