Another case involved prescription drug fraud. Twelve defendants were charged with illegally prescribing and dispensing opioids. They allegedly wrote prescriptions for patients who didn’t require them and received kickbacks from pharmaceutical companies in return.

In a third case, 11 defendants were charged with defrauding Medicare and Medicaid through billing for unnecessary durable medical equipment. They submitted false claims for equipment like wheelchairs and oxygen tanks that were never given to patients.

These charges are part of the Justice Department’s ongoing efforts to combat healthcare fraud. Over the years, they have prioritized this issue, resulting in substantial financial settlements and forfeitures.

The announcement on Wednesday serves as a reminder that healthcare fraud is a serious crime impacting patients and taxpayers. The Justice Department is dedicated to bringing those responsible to justice and safeguarding the integrity of the healthcare system.
