Kosovo announces measures to de-escalate tensions in north

The Kosovo government announced steps to lower tensions in the north of the country. The region has experienced rising tensions between Albanians and Serbs, resulting in violent clashes. To defuse the situation, the government will scale down the police presence and hold snap elections in the four municipalities earlier than originally planned.

In collaboration with NATO and the EU police mission in Kosovo, the government aims to ensure the peaceful conduct of the upcoming elections. The United States and the European Union have welcomed this move, expressing their concerns about the escalating tensions. The US State Department considers it a positive step and is ready to assist Kosovo in holding peaceful elections.

The EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, sees the government’s announcement as a necessary measure to de-escalate tensions and create an environment suitable for free and fair elections. While it remains to be seen if these measures will effectively lower tensions, the announcement signals the government’s commitment to finding a peaceful solution.
