NDAA Expected to Be Passed by Congress and Signed into Law

The Senate Armed Services Committee has approved the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2024, authorizing $876.8 billion for Defense and Energy Departments. The bill heads to the Senate floor for consideration.

The NDAA is a must-pass bill that sets Pentagon policy and funds military operations and programs. Congress passes it annually, and it’s crucial for national security.

The Senate version includes provisions absent in the House version, like a $300 million increase in Ukraine funding. It also prevents U.S. troop withdrawal from Europe and demands a plan to counter China’s military expansion.

Conversely, the House version passed in July 2023 with its own unique provisions. It adds $45 billion for the Pentagon, prohibits funds for new nuclear weapons, and requires a climate change plan.

Reconciling the two versions remains uncertain, but the final bill may integrate elements from both. Congress is expected to pass the NDAA, and President Biden will likely sign it into law.
