ASEAN Ministers to Address Intensifying Conflict in Myanmar

The ASEAN foreign ministers are convening to discuss the ongoing crisis in Myanmar. The military coup in February 2021 sparked a violent conflict between the junta and pro-democracy forces. ASEAN’s attempts to mediate a ceasefire and initiate a dialogue between the junta and its opponents have been unsuccessful.

The meeting taking place in Jakarta is anticipated to be challenging due to divisions within ASEAN on how to address the Myanmar crisis. Certain countries, such as Indonesia and Malaysia, have expressed strong criticism of the junta and called for stricter measures. Conversely, Cambodia and Laos have shown more support for the junta.

The outcome of the meeting remains uncertain. However, it is evident that the crisis in Myanmar is putting ASEAN’s unity to the test. The bloc must find a solution to address the crisis or risk undermining its credibility.

The ASEAN foreign ministers are expected to discuss several key issues during the meeting. These include the escalating conflict in Myanmar, the junta’s refusal to cease hostilities and engage in inclusive dialogue, the divisions within ASEAN on crisis management, and the necessity of preserving ASEAN’s unity.

This meeting represents a critical opportunity for ASEAN to demonstrate its commitment to resolving the Myanmar crisis. The bloc must exert pressure on the junta to end the violence and initiate dialogue with its opponents. Failure to do so will only exacerbate the crisis in Myanmar and further damage ASEAN’s credibility.
