Deadly Air Strike in Sudan Targets Residential Area

An air strike occurred in the Sudanese city of Omdurman on Saturday, July 8, 2023, resulting in the deaths of at least 22 people, as reported by the Khartoum state health ministry. The attack also caused injuries to an unspecified number of individuals.

The air strike specifically targeted a residential area in Omdurman, situated on the opposite side of the Nile River from the capital, Khartoum. According to the health ministry, the victims of the attack were civilians, including women and children.

As of now, the Sudanese army has not released any official statement regarding the air strike. However, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group aligned with the army, have attributed responsibility for the attack to the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), a rebel group engaged in fighting against the government.

This recent air strike is part of a series of deadly attacks that have occurred during the ongoing conflict between the army and the RSF in Sudan. The conflict initially started on April 15, 2023, when the RSF launched a failed coup attempt against the civilian government. Despite the unsuccessful coup, the conflict has persisted, resulting in the loss of thousands of lives.
