The conflict stems from a power struggle between the Sudan army and the RSF. The RSF is led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemeti. Dagalo played a significant role in the Sudanese government’s campaign against rebels in Darfur in the early 2000s. He is a close ally of Sudan’s military chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

The fighting began in April 2023 when Burhan dissolved the transitional government and declared a state of emergency. The RSF swiftly took control of Khartoum and other major cities. The army responded with a counter-offensive, resulting in a stalemate.

The conflict has had severe consequences for the Sudanese people. Many have been displaced and numerous lives lost. The fighting has disrupted the delivery of humanitarian aid, leaving millions in urgent need of food, water, and shelter.

Calls for international mediation have been made, but no progress has been achieved thus far. The United Nations has issued warnings of a potential civil war in Sudan due to the ongoing conflict.

The current situation in Sudan is highly unstable, and a resolution to the conflict remains uncertain. The international community must increase its efforts to mediate a peaceful solution before the situation worsens.
