India and Brazil Negotiate WTO Sugar Dispute Ahead of Deadline

The sugar dispute between India and Brazil at the World Trade Organization (WTO) stems from a WTO panel report. The report found that India had been providing excessive domestic support to sugarcane producers, which violates WTO rules. In 2017, Brazil, the world’s largest sugar exporter, filed a complaint against India at the WTO.

To resolve the dispute, India has engaged in bilateral talks with Brazil. Multiple rounds of talks have taken place, including the latest one held in Geneva in March 2023. However, no agreement has been reached thus far.

The outcome of the WTO dispute holds significant implications for the Indian sugar industry. If the WTO upholds the panel report, India may be required to make changes to its domestic sugar support policies. Such changes could result in higher sugar prices within India, affecting both consumers and businesses.

It is important to note that the WTO dispute is still ongoing, and the resolution remains uncertain. Nevertheless, the ongoing bilateral talks between India and Brazil provide a glimmer of hope for a potential agreement in the near future.
