In a televised statement, Eshed revealed that he faced pressure from members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s hard-right cabinet. They urged him to use excessive force against anti-government protesters. However, he chose not to comply with these demands, leading to his decision to resign.

Ami Eshed expressed his determination to maintain his integrity, stating, “With my head held high, I am paying an intolerably heavy personal price for my choice to avert a civil war.” He also mentioned his intention to complete an orderly handover of his responsibilities before ending his service in the police.

This resignation holds significant implications for Israel’s ongoing political crisis. The country is currently grappling with deep divisions over Netanyahu’s proposed justice system reforms. The protests against his plan have reached unprecedented scale, raising concerns about the government’s commitment to democracy.

Eshed’s decision to resign is expected to amplify these concerns. It indicates that the government is willing to employ its power to suppress dissent and interfere with the police force’s work.

The consequences of Eshed’s resignation remain uncertain, but it is evident that this development has the potential to further destabilize Israel’s political landscape.
