Mexican authorities have intercepted more than 500 migrants within just two days in the eastern state of Veracruz. The migrants were discovered in different locations, including trucks, buses, and even a van. They originated from countries such as Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Cuba, and Nicaragua.
These interceptions are part of Mexico’s ongoing efforts to combat the transportation of migrants under hazardous conditions, specifically towards the United States. In recent months, there have been notable cases of migrants found dead or injured after being smuggled in trucks or buses.
The Mexican government is fully committed to safeguarding the rights of migrants and is determined to continue cracking down on those involved in trafficking them under unsafe circumstances.
Key details about the interceptions include:
- On July 15, a truck carrying 200 migrants from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador was intercepted in the municipality of Amatlán de los Reyes.
- On July 16, a bus carrying 150 migrants from Cuba, Nicaragua, and Honduras was intercepted in the municipality of Córdoba.
- Also on July 16, a van transporting 150 migrants from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador was intercepted in the municipality of Orizaba.
All the intercepted migrants have been taken to immigration detention centers for processing. Depending on their individual circumstances, they will either be deported or allowed to remain in Mexico.
These interceptions serve as a stark reminder of the dangerous journey migrants undertake when attempting to cross Mexico illegally. Over the years, numerous cases of migrants found dead or injured after being smuggled in trucks or buses have garnered significant attention.
