Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus in Abu Dhabi

On July 24, 2023, a 28-year-old man in Abu Dhabi tested positive for MERS-CoV, announced by WHO. He’s not an Emirati or healthcare worker and had no dromedary camel contact.

Admitted on June 8, 2023, he’s isolated and receiving treatment at the hospital. Health officials are monitoring his contacts for potential infection. No secondary MERS-CoV cases reported yet.

MERS prevalence as of July 2023:

MERS is rare, with 2,605 cases reported from 27 countries.936 of these cases resulted in fatalities. Most cases found in the Arabian Peninsula, but other countries, including the US, France, Italy, also reported cases.

Countries with reported MERS cases: Algeria, Austria, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Malaysia, Netherlands, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, UAE, UK, and US.
