On Sunday, July 9, 2023, the US Central Command announced a strike conducted on July 7. The strike resulted in the death of Usamah al-Muhajir, an ISIS leader in eastern Syria. Al-Muhajir had taken over as the group’s new leader after the death of Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi in a US raid in February 2022.
According to the US military, al-Muhajir was killed in a drone strike in the Syrian town of Jindayris. The strike also eliminated several other ISIS fighters.
The US military considers al-Muhajir’s death to be a “significant blow” to ISIS. They believe it will weaken the group’s ability to carry out attacks.
ISIS is a terrorist group known for various attacks worldwide, including the 2015 Paris attacks and the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing. While the group has been weakened in recent years, it still poses a threat.
The killing of al-Muhajir is a setback for ISIS, but it is unlikely to mark the end of the group. Given ISIS’s history of resilience, it is expected to remain a threat for some time.
