On July 18, 2023, an American soldier named Travis King fled from South Korea into North Korea. Facing disciplinary actions for an assault charge, King was supposed to be sent home to Fort Bliss, Texas. He reached the airport and went through customs but then turned back and walked to the border. He crossed into North Korea and is now believed to be in their custody.

This defection poses a major crisis for the United States due to North Korea’s nuclear capabilities and human rights abuses. Ensuring King’s safety is a significant concern.

During the Korean War (1950-1953), more than 36,000 American troops lost their lives. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) reported over 7,800 Americans as “unaccounted for” from that war as of 2019. Approximately 5,300 of these missing troops are believed to have gone missing in North Korea.

The DPAA is responsible for recovering and identifying remains of fallen American service members. Despite working with North Korea, the recovery process has been slow and challenging.
