The Italian government recently implemented stricter measures regarding electric scooters due to an increase in accidents and fatalities. Cabinet approval was granted on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, for the new regulations.
These rules mandate helmet usage, the need for insurance coverage, and the requirement of a registration plate for scooters. Additionally, riders will no longer be permitted to ride on major highways or leave their scooters parked haphazardly on pavements.
The motivation behind these regulations stems from the alarming number of deaths in Rome over the past two years, solely attributed to e-scooter accidents. Furthermore, the absence of guidelines on proper scooter parking has caused inconveniences for pedestrians.
Transport Minister Matteo Salvini emphasized the necessity of these regulations in bringing order back to the streets. Salvini stressed the importance of promoting safe and responsible usage of e-scooters to ensure public safety.
The new regulations will come into effect on September 1, 2023.
Here are some of the key points of the new regulations:
- Riders must wear a helmet.
- Scooters must have insurance.
- Scooters must have a registration plate.
- Riders are prohibited from riding on major highways.
- Riders are prohibited from leaving their scooters parked haphazardly on pavements.
