In the 21st over, Warner completed his 35th Test fifty. He and Khawaja seemed poised to continue their partnership until lunch.
Unfortunately, Khawaja fell victim to a delivery from Stuart Broad that nipped back off the seam. He was caught behind for 26.
Marnus Labuschagne joined Warner at the crease, and the two batsmen safely guided Australia to lunch without any further loss.
Australia reached 73-1 at the break, with Warner undefeated on 47.
The Warner-Khawaja partnership was a positive development for Australia, as their top order has struggled in the Ashes series so far.
Warner, in particular, has faced scrutiny after failing to score a century in his last 14 Test innings.
However, he looked in good form on Wednesday and will aim to build on his start, leading Australia to a substantial first-innings total.
The second Ashes Test is evenly balanced, with England winning the toss and choosing to bowl first.
Nevertheless, Australia boasts a strong batting line-up, and if Warner and Khawaja can maintain their good form, they will have an excellent chance of winning the match.
