Iraqi government condemns burning of Koran in Copenhagen

The burning of a Koran in Copenhagen, Denmark, during a free speech event organized by the Danish far-right group Stram Kurs on February 14, 2023, has drawn strong condemnation from the Iraqi government. In response to this incident, all Danish mission staff have departed from Baghdad, as announced by the Iraqi government.

The act of burning the Koran was seen by the Iraqi government as a deliberate provocation and an insult to the sentiments of Muslims worldwide. In Copenhagen, where the event took place, protests erupted, and the repercussions were felt in other parts of the city as well.

In response to the situation, the Danish government expressed regret over the incident and empathized with the Iraqi government’s reaction. However, the Danish government also made it clear that it will not tolerate any threats or violence against Danish citizens or institutions.

The burning of the Koran sparked protests in several Muslim-majority countries, including Iraq, Iran, and Pakistan, with some protests escalating into violence.
