Lionel Messi, the renowned soccer superstar, has made it official: he will not be gracing the 2026 FIFA World Cup with his presence.
In an interview with TyC Sports, the 35-year-old Messi revealed his decision, expressing his commitment to playing for Argentina while acknowledging that he prefers not to participate in the World Cup at the age of 39.
When asked about his plans for the 2026 World Cup, Messi responded, “I think not… Qatar was my last World Cup. I’ll see how things go, but as it is right now, no, I won’t go to the next World Cup.”
Having already secured a World Cup victory in 2022, Messi’s absence from the 2026 tournament deals a significant blow to Argentina’s prospects. Nonetheless, the national team still boasts a formidable roster, including talented players such as Lautaro Martinez, Angel Di Maria, and Paulo Dybala.
As for Messi’s club career, its trajectory remains uncertain. Currently donning the Paris Saint-Germain jersey, Messi’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season. While retirement after the 2022-23 season is a possibility, he has not ruled out the option of signing a new contract with PSG or another club.
