Vazquez’s First International Goal Secures US Draw Against Jamaica

Brandon Vazquez came off the bench in the 82nd minute and scored the equalizer for the United States in the 88th minute to salvage a 1-1 draw against Jamaica in their CONCACAF Gold Cup opener on Saturday night.

The United States had been on the verge of their first loss in a Gold Cup opener since 2007, but Vazquez’s goal ensured that they would at least share the points with Jamaica. The draw leaves both teams with one point apiece in Group A. The United States will next face No. 71-ranked Grenada on Wednesday, while Jamaica will take on No. 169-ranked Suriname.

Vazquez’s goal was his first for the United States in his first competitive international appearance. The 24-year-old forward was born in Chula Vista, California, and could have played for Mexico. The draw was a disappointing result for the United States, who were heavily favored to win the game.

However, they will be relieved to have avoided a loss. They will be looking to build on their performance in the next game against Grenada.
