This encounter is not the first between Russia and the U.S.-led coalition in Syria. In 2018, a Russian Su-25 fighter jet was shot down by Turkey, a coalition member, leading to a major diplomatic crisis.

The incident on July 20 serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks involved in conducting military operations in Syria. With multiple actors and clashing interests, accidents and miscalculations are a constant concern. Deconfliction protocols are crucial to mitigating such situations.

In response to the event, the Russian military vowed to take “all necessary measures” to safeguard its aircraft in Syria. However, the U.S.-led coalition has not yet issued any comments regarding the incident.
