The Allahabad High Court expressed its concern over the portrayal of characters from the Ramayana in the film “Adipurush,” describing it as “shameful.” This observation came during the court’s hearing of a petition filed by a lawyer who requested a ban on the movie.
According to the petition, the film not only distorts the Ramayana but also offends the religious sentiments of Hindus. As a result, the court instructed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to respond to the petition.
“Adipurush” is a cinematic retelling of the Ramayana, with Prabhas cast as Ram and Kriti Sanon playing Sita. Directed by Om Raut and produced by Bhushan Kumar, the film has faced controversy ever since its release.
Numerous Hindu groups have protested against the film, accusing it of distorting the Ramayana. Additionally, the CBFC received criticism for granting the movie a U/A certificate.
The Allahabad High Court’s recent observation adds to the growing list of controversies surrounding the film. It remains uncertain whether the court will ultimately ban the movie or not.
Several specific criticisms have been directed towards the film, including:
- The portrayal of Ram as a “violent” and “aggressive” character.
- The portrayal of Sita as a “weak” and “helpless” character.
- The usage of colloquial language and slang, which many consider disrespectful towards the characters of the Ramayana.
Despite the film’s defenders arguing that it is a “modern” retelling of the Ramayana, intended to be respectful towards the characters, the ongoing controversy underscores the deep divide within Indian society regarding the depiction of the Ramayana in films.
