EU’s Borrell fails to broker breakthrough in Kosovo-Serbia talks


The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, held crisis talks with the leaders of Kosovo and Serbia. The talks took place on June 22, 2023. However, there was no breakthrough in the long-standing dispute between the two countries.

Borrell met with Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic in Brussels, Belgium. The meeting aimed to calm tensions that have been rising in recent weeks. The two leaders have been at odds over the issue of Kosovo’s independence, which Serbia does not recognize.

After the talks, Borrell said, “no breakthrough,” but “commitment to continue the dialogue.” EU to mediate dispute..

The dispute between Kosovo and Serbia dates back centuries and is complex. In 2008, Kosovo declared independence, but Serbia does not acknowledge it. The EU has facilitated a dialogue between the two sides, but progress is sluggish.

The recent tensions between Kosovo and Serbia are due to various factors. One factor is the construction of a new road in Kosovo, disputed by Serbia. There have also been reports of increased violence and intimidation against ethnic Serbs in Kosovo.
