Nigel Farage Claims Bank Closure Was Political, Coutts Says It Was Commercial

Nigel Farage, the former leader of the Brexit Party, has recently faced account closures by Coutts, a private bank. Farage claims that the bank is closing his accounts for political reasons and that Nigel Farage has been rejected by nine other lenders as well.

Coutts, however, states that the decision to close Farage’s accounts was purely commercial. They assert that Farage’s financial standing no longer met the requirements to be a customer of the private bank. Farage, on the other hand, disputes this claim, stating that he was never informed of any minimum balance requirement.

The closure of Farage’s accounts has drawn the attention of the UK government. Andrew Griffith, the financial services minister, expressed his belief that banks have a responsibility to uphold freedom of expression during a parliamentary committee meeting.

This incident has sparked a wider discussion about the role of banks in politics. Some argue that banks should not be able to close accounts based on political views, while others contend that banks have the right to choose their customers.

The outcome of this situation is uncertain, and it remains to be seen if Farage will be able to find another bank willing to accept his business. Nonetheless, the closure of his Coutts accounts serves as a clear indication that his political views have made him a target for certain financial institutions.
