Russia Air Strikes Odesa Port, Damages Infrastructure

Russia initiated missile and drone strikes on southern and eastern Ukraine during the night of July 17-18, 2023. The strikes specifically targeted the Black Sea port of Odesa, resulting in significant damage to its infrastructure. Port facilities and several residential buildings were among the structures affected.

These strikes were perceived as a direct response to a prior Ukrainian assault on the Kerch Bridge, a crucial link connecting Russia to the Crimean Peninsula. Although the bridge sustained damage, it has not been closed to traffic and remains operational.

Odesa has recently become a recurrent target of Russian aggression, exemplifying a series of attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure. The consequences have been far-reaching, disrupting transportation systems such as roads, bridges, railways, and airports. This disruption has severely hampered Ukraine’s ability to facilitate the movement of goods and people. Tragically, these attacks have also resulted in civilian casualties and injuries.

Condemnations of the Russian attacks on Ukraine have been resolute, particularly from the United States and its allies. Consequently, the United States has imposed sanctions on Russia and extended military and financial aid to Ukraine.
