Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, currently serving a 9-year sentence, expects even longer imprisonment. In a video released, he reveals two new criminal cases against him – “organizing an unsanctioned protest” and “insulting a court.” Navalny strongly believes these cases are politically motivated and foresees a sentence of 15 years or more.
Arrested in January 2021 after returning from Germany, where he was treated for poisoning, Navalny claims the Russian government is responsible. Initially sentenced to 2 years and 8 months for parole violation in a 2014 embezzlement case, which he deems politically motivated, he remains undeterred.
In the video, Navalny fearlessly pledges to continue the fight for democracy and human rights in Russia, even behind bars. He resolves not to surrender and perseveres for a free and democratic Russia.
Navalny’s arrest and imprisonment have sparked global condemnation, with the United States, European Union, and other countries imposing sanctions on Russian officials. Despite Kremlin denials of involvement, many believe the government targets Navalny due to his opposition to President Vladimir Putin.
His incarceration has united his supporters, leading to widespread protests in Russia and calls to boycott elections. Yet, the duration of his imprisonment remains uncertain, revealing the government’s determination to silence critics through legal means.
