Russian missiles hit an apartment building in the Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv on Tuesday, killing at least eight people and wounding 30, according to Ukrainian officials. The strikes also damaged a school and a shopping center.

Survivors of the attack described the fiery blasts and the chaos that ensued. “I was in the kitchen when I heard a loud bang,” said one woman. “I ran to the window and saw the apartment building on fire. People were screaming and running.”

The attack on Mykolaiv is the latest in a series of Russian strikes on civilian targets in Ukraine. In recent days, Russian forces have also hit a maternity hospital in Mariupol, a train station in Kramatorsk, and a theater in Mariupol where hundreds of people were sheltering.

The United Nations estimates that more than 4,000 civilians have been killed in Ukraine since the start of the war. However, the actual number of casualties is likely much higher.

The attacks on civilian targets have been condemned by the international community. The United States, the European Union, and the United Kingdom have all imposed new sanctions on Russia in response to the attacks.
