UK Amazon Workers to Strike During Prime Day

Nearly 900 Amazon workers at a warehouse in Coventry, United Kingdom, are planning to go on strike for three days from July 11-13. This strike will coincide with Amazon’s Prime Day sales event, which is scheduled for July 11-12.

The reason behind the strike is a pay dispute. The workers are demanding a pay increase of £15 per hour, equivalent to about $19.25 USD. They are also advocating for union recognition to collectively negotiate with Amazon.

This is not the first time that Amazon workers have taken such action. In June, workers at the same Coventry warehouse went on strike for three days. Additionally, in December 2021, workers at Amazon warehouses in Germany, Spain, and Italy went on strike during Black Friday.

As a major employer in the United Kingdom, Amazon has faced criticism regarding its working conditions. Some workers have described the conditions as “brutal” and “inhumane.”

The upcoming strike is expected to have a significant impact on Amazon’s Prime Day sales, as the company is projected to generate around $7 billion in revenue from this event. This figure represents a 12% increase compared to the disclosed revenue during the third quarter of last year’s Prime Day.

It remains uncertain how Amazon will respond to the strike, as the company has yet to issue any public statements regarding the impending industrial action.
