Electric-truck maker Nikola is laying off 270 employees. The company announced the layoffs on Friday, June 16, 2023.

The layoffs are part of a broader restructuring effort at Nikola. The company is looking to cut costs and focus on its core business of manufacturing and selling electric trucks.

The layoffs will impact employees across all levels and functions at Nikola. The company said that it is providing severance packages and outplacement assistance to affected employees.

Nikola is not the only electric-truck maker that has announced layoffs in recent months. In May, Lordstown Motors announced that it was laying off 1,000 employees. And in April, Rivian Automotive announced that it was laying off 700 employees.

The layoffs at Nikola, Lordstown Motors, and Rivian are a sign of the challenges facing the electric-truck industry. The industry is still in its early stages, and there is a lot of competition. The companies are also facing rising costs and supply chain disruptions.

Despite the challenges, Nikola is still optimistic about the future of the electric-truck industry. The company said that it is still on track to start production of its Tre battery-electric truck in 2023.

Nikola is also working on a hydrogen-powered truck, the Nikola Badger. The Badger is not expected to go into production until 2024.

The layoffs at Nikola are a setback for the company. However, the company is still committed to the electric-truck industry. Nikola is confident that it will be able to overcome the challenges and become a successful company.
