The massive illuminated ‘X’ sign, recently installed atop the former Twitter headquarters in San Francisco, had to be taken down due to various issues. Despite its striking appearance, the sign was problematic from the start. Measuring 12-foot-tall, the bright white LED-lit letters formed the letter “X,” immediately drawing attention from both local residents and users on social media platforms.
However, the sign’s charm quickly turned sour, as it began causing problems for the surrounding community. The main concerns included the lack of a proper permit for installation and the disruptive flashing lights that persisted throughout the night. Consequently, city officials couldn’t overlook these issues and decided to take action.
On July 30, the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection officially served a notice of violation to the property owner responsible for erecting the sign without obtaining the necessary permit. Additionally, the city acknowledged the sign as a “nuisance,” citing the unnecessary glare it imposed on nearby residents, further cementing the decision to remove it.
As a result, on July 31, workers were seen dismantling the controversial sign. The consequences for the company responsible for the installation remained uncertain, leaving them potentially subject to fines or penalties.
